Westfield – Studio East
“Studio East is a mark of our commitment to the future of retail, and our passion for East London, one of the most creative destinations in the world.” Michael Gutman, Westfield Managing Director
As Westfield Stratford City’s Brand Communications agency, ODD were briefed to create a unique initiative that would help put Westfield’s new shopping centre firmly on the PR agenda in 2010, a year before it’s opening date. To celebrate East London’s creative spirit, we helped Westfield launch Studio East, a cultural initiative aimed at supporting and nurturing young talent. As part of this initiative, a Cultural Committee chaired by retail expert Mary Portas was formed to help grant the next generation of creative innovators access to their industry’s lead-ing lights. The incredible collective of London’s most acclaimed talent and opinion formers awarded a series of four high profile commissions which will be embedded in the actual fabric of Westfield Stratford City, the prestigious gateway to London’s Olympic Park.
The official launch of Studio East took place at a temporary rooftop pavilion created by award-winning architects Carmody Groarke, in collaboration with famed East-end eatery Bistrotheque. Built atop a carpark in the live Westfield Stratford City construction site, the pavilion provided spectacular skyline views over key London landmarks, including the neighbouring Olympic Stadium and Zaha Hadid’s 2012 Aquatics Centre.
Open to the public from June 16-July 4, 2010, over 2000 guests visited the striking structure and enjoyed fresh summer food and cocktails, craned in daily. Some were lucky enough to get a table. Almost everyone else in the creative industries will have since heard of Studio East and the positive contribution that Westfield are making to the surrounding communities.
